Finding Strength in Emotional Regulation After the Election
The results of an election—whether they align with our hopes or challenge them—often evoke deep emotions. It’s natural to feel a range of reactions: from relief to disappointment, excitement to frustration. But amidst the emotional whirlwind, there’s one thing we can control: our response.
Emotional Regulation: Why It Matters
Emotional regulation is the ability to manage and respond to our emotions in a healthy way. It doesn’t mean suppressing our feelings; it means recognizing them, understanding their root, and then finding ways to move forward with intention. This skill becomes especially crucial in moments of uncertainty, as it helps us avoid reactions that might not serve our long-term goals or values.
For those of us in HR and other fields focused on people, emotional regulation is essential. Our roles require us to foster inclusivity, lead with empathy, and manage conflicts with sensitivity. Being emotionally regulated doesn’t mean we’re unaffected; it means we’re consciously choosing how to respond to keep moving toward our goals.
Facing Uncertainty and Moving Forward
While change can feel unsettling, it also offers us a chance to reassess, innovate, and grow. Now is the time to ask ourselves what values and goals we want to pursue moving forward, even if the external environment feels uncertain. For me, this means continuing to support women in lumber and building materials, promoting DEIB, and empowering underrepresented voices. These values are my “true north,” and no election outcome can change my commitment to them.
Why Hiding Isn’t an Option
During times like these, it can be tempting to withdraw or disconnect, but this isn’t the time to shrink away. Instead, let’s embrace our role as changemakers. Let’s channel our energy into connecting with others, speaking up on issues that matter to us, and supporting those who might feel discouraged. I believe that by coming together, we can create progress and build a more inclusive, resilient community.
Finding Common Ground
Even in our differences, there is always common ground to be found. Whether it’s our commitment to fairness, empathy, or simply the desire to see our communities thrive, these shared values can be a foundation for connection. Let’s use this moment as a reminder of our power to impact change, no matter the challenges we face.
Let’s move forward with purpose and resilience. Together, we can create meaningful progress.
